When someone writes to us for the first time, they almost always ask the same thing: “what exactly is a tantric massage?” It is a fair question, because there is a lot of confusing information online. Here is how we understand it and how we work at Masaje Panamá, with no mystery and no exaggerated promises.

A short definition

Tantric massage is a slow, mindful full-body massage that begins with the breath and focuses on how each part of the body feels. It is not about reaching any particular result. The idea is to be present: to notice the touch, release tension and slow down.

Where it comes from

Tantra is a family of spiritual traditions that began in India more than a thousand years ago. Many of its practices deal with attention, breathing and the connection between body and mind.

Tantric massage as it is practised today is more recent: a contemporary practice that developed in the West from the 1970s and 1980s onwards, borrowing some of those ideas and combining them with relaxation massage techniques. So it is honest to say it is inspired by tantra, not an ancient traditional technique.

What happens in a session, step by step

  1. Opening conversation. About five minutes to talk about how you are arriving, what you are looking for and what your limits are. Whatever we agree here is respected for the whole session.
  2. Shower. You have a private bathroom, clean towels and everything you need.
  3. Breathing. Before the first touch we breathe together for a few minutes, to leave the day outside and connect with the body.
  4. Massage. Long, slow strokes with warm oils across the back, legs, arms, hands and feet. The therapist adjusts pressure and pace to your breathing.
  5. Closing. We finish in silence. Afterwards there is tea and time to come back slowly.

We explain each moment in more detail on The experience.

How it differs from a relaxation massage

The hand techniques are similar. Everything around them is different:

  • Pace. Much slower, with deliberate long pauses.
  • Breathing. It is part of the session, not something happening in the background.
  • The conversation beforehand. We always talk about expectations and limits first.
  • Length. Sessions usually last ninety minutes or more, because slowing down takes time.
  • Attention. The whole body is treated as one, not just isolated tense spots.

What it is not

We want to be very clear: it is not a sexual service. We work under rules of respect and consent that apply to both sides:

  • You can pause or end the session at any moment, without giving a reason.
  • The therapist can also end it if the agreements are not respected.
  • We only see clients aged 18 and over.

What you might feel

Everyone experiences it differently. What our clients tell us most is that they leave calmer, with a quiet mind and a sense of deep rest. It is normal to feel sleepy, or the opposite, full of energy. And it is fine if you find it hard to relax the first time; it usually gets easier in the second session.

We do not promise medical effects or “cures”. Massage is a relaxation and wellbeing experience, not a health treatment.

When to wait (or check with a doctor first)

As with any full-body massage, there are times when it is better to wait or talk to your doctor first:

  • Fever, flu or any active infection.
  • Recent injuries, fractures or surgery.
  • Circulation problems such as thrombosis or inflamed varicose veins.
  • Pregnancy: check with your doctor first.
  • Open wounds, burns or irritated skin.
  • Allergy to oils or fragrances: tell us and we will use a neutral oil.

If in doubt, message us on WhatsApp before booking. We would rather reschedule than offer a session that is not safe for you.

How to start

If it is your first time, we recommend the ninety-minute tantric massage. You can also meet the therapists and choose who you feel most comfortable with.
